SALEM, W.Va. — Salem University is reclassifying its athletics as a member of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics.
Salem will leave NCAA Division II and join the River States Conference as part of the transition.
The River States Conference features Brescia University, Indiana University Columbus, Indiana University East, Indiana University Kokomo, Indiana University Southeast, Kentucky Christian University, Midway University, Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College, University of Rio Grande and the West Virginia University Institute of Technology.
The university released a statement Monday:
“Salem’s return to the NAIA provides its athletic programs with a defined championship pathway through conference and national competition. Conference membership will also establish a regional schedule for Salem teams, strengthening competition against institutions throughout the region.”
